Speaker: David Hogan

Subject: Mud Puddles or Eden in Miniature - The Vernal Pools of San Diego

David Hogan, Director of the Chaparral Conservancy, will present a talk on the pools that appear in spring in San Diego County and provide a fascinating view of ecology in action.

 

Tuesday, February 28

Speaker: Sara Motheral

Subject: San Diego Cactus Wren Conservation and Habitat Restoration

Sara Motherall will report on a project surveying the habitat of the local Cactus Wren. The wren lives in the San Pasqual Valley and the Applied Ecology staff are surveying the nesting and feeding areas to learn what type of environment is required for the species to thrive. The Applied Ecology division is a part of the Institute of Conservation Research of the San Diego Zoological Society.

Soil Science for Native Plants Gardeners

Jen Merzigian of Walter Andersen Nursery will present a talk on the science of the soil, suitable for beginners and experienced gardeners alike.

Speaker: Patrick McConnell

Subject: Challenges in Maintaining Natural Lands

Patrick McConnell is an experienced natural lands manager. He will speak on some of the challenges of his profession: habitat maintenance and restoration, rare plant habitat assessments, and vegetation trend monitoring.

Subject: Integrated Pest Management

David Shaw is a Farm Agent for San Diego County Extension. He will speak on Integrated Pest Management and how better to control pest in our gardens.
